Nobody tells you that the hardest part of nursing isn’t always at the bedside.
Breaking to Becoming is the story of the messy middle: the years between the nurse I hoped I’d be and the leader I eventually became. It’s about finding my way into hospice, climbing into leadership before anyone taught me how to lead, and learning the hard way that workplaces can break you just as surely as they can build you. And it’s about the endings that came without warning, both at work and at home, and what it took to keep going through them.
This isn’t a polished transformation story with a neat bow on top. It’s an honest one.
I wrote this for the new nurse sitting in her car after a shift, wondering if she’s cut out for this. For the new leader who got promoted and handed a set of keys but no map. And for anyone who has ever been told, in so many words, that this is just how it is. It doesn’t have to be. And it does get better.
